Does it matter which corner the robot is placed on?

No. Any of the four corners works. Each corner has a slightly different line pattern on the grid (one corner has an extra line, another has none, and so on). The robot reads that pattern during calibration and knows exactly which corner it started from. Base with the board removed, showing the navigation grid (lines and dots) with the four corners' differing line patterns called out.
